Q: Why are officers assigned full time to schools.
A: Schools that serve teens are like large cities. There are many activities that involved students, most of them positive. The program was not created to monitor the activities of the students but to bridge the gap between the law enforcement community and youth.
Q: What is a School Resource Officer?
A: A Hanahan Police Officer is assigned full time to a specific school. They act as Teacher, Counselor and Law Enforcement liaison for students. An SRO's job is to act as a conduit not only between police and student's but for school staff and parents.
Q: Are School Resource Officers there to just arrest people?
A: No. Having a School Resource Officer on site means that presence is immediate during a crisis or emergency situation. Although the burden of responsibility for the SRO is to interact with students and staff while on campus. Not every situation that involve the police is negative. Law enforcement and safety related work on campus involves such activities as enforcement of school zone speed limits. Officers also serve to assist students who may have been the victim of a crime on or off campus.
Q: Please Explain the law enforcement aspect of the School Resource Program.
A: Law Enforcement activities involve the typical response to any emergency situation or response to investigate any crime that occurs on campus. At times Officers may investigate cases that involved students off campus. Students who are victims of crime many times wait until they are at school to report to the School Resource Officer that they know personally. Activities also include proactive patrol of school grounds assuring security of the campus against trespassers or intruders.
